Belmont Intermediate School
Water polo
water_polo.jpg Water polo is played throughout the school year at the Glenfield Leisure Centre, Bentley Ave, Glenfield. Year 8 play on a Tuesday afternoon/evening and year 7 play on either a Tuesday afternoon or a Wednesday afternoon/evening. The competition and training is organised by Glenfield Leisure Centre.

Games and training sessions are held in the dive pool. This is very deep so it is important that players are confident swimmers.

Interested students sign up at the beginning of the school year. Year 8 players are trialled and placed in teams of similar ability. Year 7 players attend only training sessions for the first few weeks of the year, then are divided into random teams to gain skills for the remainder of term 1. Year 7 players are graded at the end of term 1 ready to play competition games for the remainder of the year.

Team selection is the decision of the water polo coaches at Glenfield Leisure Centre and our own water polo coach. Changes to teams may occur, at the coaches' discretion, as skills and fitness levels change.

Practice sessions are held at the Glenfield Leisure Centre on Friday mornings at 7.00am for Year 8 players and 7.40am for Year 7 players.  Parents are responsible for providing transport to training but a bus transports students back to Belmont Intermediate after training. Players arrive at school late on Friday mornings at approximately 9.10am.  Our coach may also request players to attend additional practice sessions during the week.  Players are expected to do extra swimming for fitness during their own time. 'Swim for Polo' is available at the Glenfield Leisure Centre every morning before school.  There is an extra cost for this.

Parents are responsible for the role of team manager and for transporting to games and training sessions. We are lucky to have a volunteer coach for our A teams.  A donation per player, per term, is expected to help pay costs for our coach.

Students have to opportunity to leave water polo, or new students to sign up, at the end of each term. New players are placed in teams if space allows, otherwise they join a waiting list.

Costs are usually a total of approximately $105.00 per term. $65.00 is paid directly to Glenfield Leisure Centre. This covers games and the Friday morning training session. $40.00 is payable to Belmont Intermediate School to cover the costs of the bus and administration.
