Belmont Intermediate School
Treaty of Waitangi
Policy

Rationale
The Treaty of Waitangi is the founding document of New Zealand, it provides a framework for partnership today and in the future.  Belmont Intermediate School Board of Trustees accepts an obligation to develop policies and practices which reflect New Zealand’s bi-cultural heritage.

At BIS we will create opportunities for the whole school to experience, understand and celebrate te reo me ona tikanga Maori (the Maori Language and Culture) as an inherent and special part of our community.

The principal will:

1.   Ensure the curriculum reflects the Maori perspective where appropriate
2.   Encourage students and teachers alike to learn and develop an understanding of Maori values, attitudes and behaviour (Tikanga Maori)
3.   Provide opportunities for students who wish to learn Te Reo Maori
4.   Ensure on going consultation with our Maori community
5.   Ensure pastoral care is provided in culturally appropriate ways
