Children experience significant growth during the period of emerging adolescence. Their successful development during this stage is dependent upon a specific set of needs being addressed.
The school seeks to:
- Give all students personal opportunities for academic and cultural success
- Provide diverse opportunities so all students can develop confidence in their ability to try out new things and adapt
- Ensure that students and staff interact in a positive way
- Present all students with a range of physical endeavours that will promote physical growth, skill development and a positive attitude towards looking after themselves
- Allow all students access to opportunities where they can participate in school life in a meaningful way
- Provide an environment that is physically and emotionally safe and where all students understand routines and behaviour expectations
Support
The school is aware that pre-adolescence is a time of significant change and consequently there will be times when a student may require support to assist with their personal growth and development.
All students have access to Year 8 peer mediators who have been trained in assisting students experiencing minor conflicts. Serious issues are dealt with in accordance with school policy and process. There is a transparent process for resolving any forms of verbal or physical harassment.
A close relationship exists with a number of North Shore health agencies that can be called upon to assist with issues that the school feels it cannot address effectively by itself. Students are able to self-refer to our public health nurse who visits fortnightly.
Class health programmes focus on personal relationships, dealing with conflict and caring for yourself.
