Policy 1. The Board of Trustees has complete discretion on the management of the school as it thinks fit in terms of section 75 of the Education Act 1989. 2. The Board has resolved that (a) the Principal will be responsible for the management of the school, and (b) the Principal is to keep the Board fully informed of the performance of the school in accordance with the vision, mission and values, and with the Strategic Plan which has been approved by the Board. 3. Before the Board reviews or updates its Strategic Plan, the Principal is to present to the Board the Principal’s vision for the future direction of the school. Implementation of Policy The Principal is to (a) Keep the Board informed on management issues as the need arises, and in particular will inform the Board of any risks the school faces that the Board may need to act on. The Board expects the Principal to adhere to a “no surprises” approach when reporting to the board and anticipates open and prompt reporting of concerns. (b) Report to the Board regularly on performance of the school against the Strategic and Annual Plans. In particular the principal shall inform the Board promptly if there is a risk that goals in the Annual Plan will not be achieved. Purpose This Policy covers the division of responsibility for management of the school between the board and the Principal in terms of section 75 of the Education Act 1989. s.75 Boards to control management of schools Except to the extent that any enactment or the general law of New Zealand provides otherwise, a school’s board has complete discretion to control the management of the school as it thinks fit.
