| Monitoring Student Achievement |
PolicyThis policy is intended to cover the Board’s responsibilities under NAG 1,2 and 2A which envisages that the Board will satisfy the requirements of the Guideline by working through the Principal and Staff. In conformity with this, the Monitoring Student Achievement policy is built around the concept of governance, that is, setting strategic direction, approving the annual plan and budget presented by the Principal, and monitoring the implementation of the Annual Plan and Budget by the Principal. 1. In Term 1 of each school year, the Board will consider achievement data presented to it by the Principal and determine the extent to which current annual achievement targets need to be amended for the annual plan for the year. 2. As part of the process of considering and approving the Budget in Term 4 the Board will consider allocation of resources in such areas and at such levels that the Achievement Targets can be met. 3. In Term 4 of any school year, the Principal will present achievement data and other results for the school year to the end of Term 3. The Board will satisfy itself that the Principal has systems in place to address identified variances. 4. The principal will report anecdotally throughout the year on any ongoing assessment trends in his Principal’s report to the Board. This will include reporting student achievement against the National Standards in reading, writing and mathematics. 5. The results of this review will be taken into account in the Performance Appraisal of the Principal. Implementation of Policy In implementing this policy the Board will expect the Principal to: 1. Ensure the delivery of the curriculum fosters student achievement and development of the core competencies (see ‘Curriculum Delivery Policy’) 2. Develop and implement assessment practices, and gather information and data to demonstrate to the Board that the requirements of NAG 1 are being met. 3. In accordance with NAG 2 and 2a use National Standards to: (a) report to students and their parents on the student’s progress and achievement in relation to National Standards. Reporting to parents in plain language in writing must be at least twice a year; (b) report school-level data in the board’s annual report on National Standards under three headings: i. school strengths and identified areas for improvement; ii. the basis (National Standard achievement data) for identifying areas for improvement; and iii. planned actions for raising student achievement. (c) report in the board’s annual report on: i. the numbers and proportions of students at, above, below or well below the standards, including by Māori, Pasifika and by gender (where this does not breach an individual’s privacy); and ii. where students are progressing against the standards as well as where they are not achieving. (d) Student achievement for Ongoing Reviewable Resource (ORRS) Funded Students will be monitored twice a year. Review process - Board of Trustees
