BIS Science Fair
This was a very successful and well patronised event held on Wednesday and Thursday 11 and 12 August in the BIS hall.  Overall the students completed their projects to a high standard.

The projects were marked initially by classroom teachers and then  ‘star’ selected projects were closely examined by science teachers, Glenn Turner and Elize Terblanche from Takapuna Grammar and Leon Jacobs and Susan Revell from Belmont Intermediate.  This year we also had some senior students from Takapuna Grammar assisting with the judging and they were of great value.

Twenty projects have been selected to go though to The North Harbour Science Fair on Sunday 29th August at Birkdale Intermediate.  Congratulations to the following students:
Ahmed Sherif, Lisa Piper, Augustine Morgan- Guthrie, Phoebe Johnson, Tegan Lawrence, Amy Ollerhead, Marcello Russo, Gabriel Raubenheimer, Bridget Connolly, Niko Macmillan, Emily Coyle, Tia Conley, Max Griffiths, James Dulcich, Nandia Terblanche, Max Parekura, Leah Wilks, Jonathan Kemp, Mitchell Watts and Kate Clough.

Duffy Club Inter-School Money Competition
On Wednesday afternoon eleven teams competed in this competition run by the Duffy Club. The quiz was about money, interest, assets etc and the final result was VERY CLOSE.  In second on 8.5 was “Money, Money Money” (Tafadzwa Mudapakati, Gina Kim and Danielle de Marigny) and in first place on 9 was “Armagedon” with (Gabriel Raubenheimer, AJ Balmer and Chris Lawrence). Each member of these teams left with a new Nokia mobile phone and will represent BIS at the Auckland final on Saturday 18th September at Auckland University.

Two other students also received mobile phone after answering spot prize question – Max Hayman and Jessica Draper-Wheeler. Congratulations to these students and well done to all the competitors.

The students had an enjoyable hour with the Duffy Twins of Duffy Club, who look forward to seeing ‘Armageddon’ and ‘Money Money Money’ competing against the other 30 Auckland schools in the Grand Final. We hope you can support Belmont Intermediate by joining Duffy Club on Facebook to follow progress of the teams and further details of the Grand Final. Learning Support Centre looking for a surplus laptop
Our Occupational Therapist and Speech Language Therapist are working with a student who can not use his hands to operate a computer, but he has learnt to use a head-mounted laser and special keyboard to access the computer and do all his written work. This is currently attached to a desktop computer, however if we had a laptop he would be able to take his computer to all his classes and complete his work with his fellow classmates. If anyone has an unused laptop (not MAC ) they could donate to us for a while we would be most appreciative.  Please contact Michele at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Auckland Mathex – 19th August, ASB Stadium, Kohimarama
Auckland Mathex was an amazing spectacle with 100 teams sending their runners charging across the floor of the stadium, sounding like a herd of elephants.

The Year 7 and Year 8 teams both acquitted themselves very well.  Year 7 teams were placed 4th and 5th equal out of 100 teams and Year 8 teams were placed 7th and 8th equal out of a similar number of teams. The Year 8 questions were particularly challenging with the winning score being only 75.  Well done all BIS students! Thank you to those parents who came to support the teams.

Recent Measles Cases in Auckland Prompt Reminder to Get Immunised
Auckland Regional Public Health Service (ARPHS) is expecting more measles cases after two apparently unconnected cases in two families were confirmed in the Auckland region.

Medical Officer of Health at Auckland Regional Public Health Service, Dr Brad Novak says, “Measles needs to be taken very seriously. This disease spreads easily through the air, especially from coughing and sneezing – it is highly infectious. It commonly causes ear infections and pneumonia, and may lead to other serious complications and can, in some cases, be fatal.”

Measles Fact Sheets are available on http://www.arphs.govt.nz/notifiable/measles.asp <http://www.arphs.govt.nz/notifiable/measles.asp> or call Healthline 0800 611 116 for Free Health Advice, lines are open Monday – Friday 9am – 6pm.
