I would like to take this opportunity to thank those of you who have given up your time to support our staff and students during either their EOTC activities last week or the waterwise sessions which have started this year. It is not possible for us to provide these wonderful learning opportunities without your support and it is most appreciated. The two years spent at an Intermediate school is a time when parents and caregivers can become disconnected from their child’s learning and social interactions as they naturally become more independent. Taking responsibility for yourself, and specifically your learning is something that we value here at Belmont Intermediate School. We encourage parents and caregivers to be active participants in this process by staying connected with their child’s learning and social development.Homework can often be a bone of contention in many households – it certainly is in mine. A considerable amount of research has been conducted on the effects of homework on a child’s development. Much of this has been contradictory. There is research that supports the notion that homework enhances a student’s development while some say that it has minimal or no impact. It would seem, however, that the higher the student is in the education system the more impact quality homework has. Parents can assist their son or daughter with homework by: • Providing a quiet area in the home where they can work uninterrupted; • Insist that homework is done at a regular time throughout the week; • Discussing homework assignments and clarifying expectations; The homework policy for students at Belmont Intermediate is reflected in the following statements: * Ideally homework should complement classroom learning. It might include – completing unfinished work, research, reading, recording thoughts in a learning journal, mathletics or revision. * It must be relevant to the individual student’s needs and generally be completed independently. * Homework tasks should be clearly explained to assist the students to complete it to the best of their ability. * Feedback should be provided on tasks that have been completed at home. * The extent of time devoted to homework will vary according to individual student needs and the current classroom programme. Homeroom teachers are conscious of the fact that students have a number of after school commitments during the school week. Where possible homework will be set on a weekly basis so students can develop the skills to manage their time and complete set tasks.
